The Nomad Hotel (LA + NY)
The stylish Nomad Hotels (part of Sydell Group) in Los Angeles and NYC are raising the bar on the design and social experience.
NYC: Conceived by Andrew Zobler, developer of the nearby Ace Hotel, the NoMad is the Ace for grown-ups. Opened in 2012, the 12-story Beaux-Arts facade set the tone for the interiors, designed by the French architect Jacques Garcia. Daniel Humm and Will Guidara—the award-winning team behind the fine-dining institution Eleven Madison Park—prove they are equally adept in creating an exceptional, yet less formal, dining experience at the NoMad, a hotel restaurant that has become a destination in and of itself. Go early and have a cocktail at the stately, mahogany Elephant Bar—the bartenders have mastered seasonal reinvention of the classics—while you wait for a table in one of the restaurant’s elegant, yet intimate dining rooms. 1170 Broadway, New York, NY 10001, United States | (347) 472-5660
LA: In January 2018, Downtown LA’s swanky, luxurious and hip NoMad hotel opened inside the former Giannini Bank building. The old bank was designed by Morgan, Walls, and Morgan, and opened in 1923. Long vacant, it’s been under construction for about two years. Killefer Flammang Architects has been in charge of the architecture and adaptive reuse. Jewel-toned velvet is everywhere in the lobby—from the towering grassy green curtains in the corners of the lobby to the cornflower blue seating in the “library,” a cabinet of curiosities-inspired space for hotel guests—and it is fantastic. Interior design is by Jacques Garcia, who also designed the NoMad in Manhattan. The upper floors of the 12-story building are devoted to the 241 guest rooms, laid out in seven different formats, from the basic “classic” room to a variety of suites. Flanking the central area where the Lobby restaurant holds court is the Giannini Bar (named for the bank’s founder Amodeo Giannini) and a coffee bar that converts into an alcohol bar at night (mirrors behind the bar counter retract to reveal the booze). 649 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90014 (213) 358-0000
