Travel Book Favorites

Aside from pouring over travel magazines and maps for most of my life, books and movies have ultimately inspired my travels near and far. Having just read a couple of new gems, I thought it was a good time to round up some travel literature classics along with recent faves.

Recently I snatched up the new books “To Shake the Sleeping Self” by Jedidiah Jenkins, and the most recent “The Best American Travel Writing” by multiple writers, but edited by “Wild” author Cheryl Strayed. It made me think of my love of writing & fiction books (I was a literature major, some things never change) and which ones had inspired me to travel over the years. So I humbly offer a round up below of ones that inspired me to explore places, but as books can be a personal thing, I would love to hear from you if you have more suggestions! (You can find an extensive list on Good Reads as well)

  1. Shantaram – by Gregory David Roberts

  2. As I walked out one midsummer morning – by Laurie Lee

  3. In a sunburned country – Bill Bryson

  4.  Blood River: A Journey to Africa’s Broken Heart  – Tim Butcher

  5. Eat, Pray, Love  – Elizabeth Gilbert

  6.  Travels with Charley: In Search of America – by John Steinbeck

  7. A Year in Provence – Peter Mayle

  8. A Moveable Feast – Ernest Hemingway

  9. Seven Years in Tibet – Heinrich Harrer

  10. Under the Tuscan Sun – Frances Mayes

  11. Out of Africa – Isak Dinesen

  12. Life on the Mississippi – Mark Twain

  13. The Motorcycle Diaries – Ernesto Che Guevara

  14. On the road – by Jack Kerouac

And so many more – will add more to this list shortly!
